Analysing costs while optimising efficiency and productivity is crucial for any modern sawmill. At AB Hilmer Andersson, one stack of wood is moved at least seven times before being stowed for transport – moving 100,000 stacks of wood seven times per year means 700,000 lifts. “For us, high efficiency and reliability is extremely important. We can’t afford any breakdowns. The machines must be up and running at all times,” says Nils Andersson.
AB Hilmer Andersson invested in five Kalmar DCG140-6 forklift trucks equipped with the latest generation of Stage IIIB engines for lower fuel consumption. The hydraulic system uses variable pumps for heavy lifting, meaning that energy use is restricted to actual performance. The forklift also has an optional sleep mode that kicks in after five minutes of idling. The innovative new EGO cabin increases driver comfort and productivity.
“Fuel consumption is considerably lower compared to our previous trucks,” says Nils Andersson of the savings the forklifts bring. The company estimates the saving to be around two to three litres per hour. An optional reverse cooling fan extends engine life by blowing out harmful dust particles that would otherwise clog the filters. “This reduced engine stress will save a lot of downtime and maintenance costs,” says truck driver Michael Dahlberg.
